Spammers
Hey folks,
In a temporary measure to stop the influx of spam, I have prevented new members from signing up.
Meanwhile, I am going to be looking at alternative forum softwares that have better spam detection measures.
Any suggestions warmly welcomed.

One of the forums I'm on is a PhPBB forum, and I've never seen any spammers there... I dunno if its something thats built into the forum itself or
something that someone added, but I know the particular forum I'm on has a place on the registration form to answer a question in order to register.
So like anyone that tried to register here would have to... I dunno, name all the Turks or something.
I know I've also seen forums with captcha images too

I could code something, but to be honest I just don't have the time or inclination to hack php at night when I have to do that during the dayjob...
So I want something that's kind of inbuilt...

Semi-related.
I found some inbuilt captcha stuff, so turned user registration back on (ask your friends!).
I also did some um... 'clean-up'.
You may.... MAY.... notice a slight difference in your post count.

Ah, all those '0' post threads. I was tempted to delete them a little bit ago as well. >.>

Yes, they were very strange! Mysterious ghost threads revived from a distant forgotten past... taunting me with promises of thready-goodness that
never came...

Case and point, I check on the board while in class, and nothing. About 3 hours later, I end up needing to delete 10 threads. >.>
Thankfully a lot of them were in the same forum and I could just check-box the ones I wanted gone, rather than deleting them all 1 by 1. XD

I'm always tempted to edit their posts so they sound like they're saying something terrible. Like, I'll use my mod powers to go in and delete all
their barely comprehendible gibberish, replacing it with stuff like "I enjoy luring children into my windowless van," and "I really liked The Phantom
Menace. Jar-Jar Binks is my favourite movie character ever!"
But instead I just delete them, and I'll keep on deleting them until they post something in Tenka. Then they will enter Matt country, and the toll for
entry is humiliation (and £35 to pay for maintenance, gotta feed my toll booth robot somehow).
But seriously, they annoy me. Is there anything we can do to make them go away?

I suggest a swift kick to the soft parts. If bots had soft parts. If not, well...
Polite letters of refusal?
"You're sexy when you rant, Josh."--Frankie Wagner, Internet Wife.
I'm not seeing this on the basis that it's a thief of a movie... like... like Gayham on ice, or in space. --Matt relates best idea for a movie ever.
Everyone knows the more people you can kill the better you are.-Pete (Gabriel)
On Ten things you don't know about me--1. my last girlfriend was just in it for the sex, said "I didn't think it could get that good on this planet."
2. I think that counts for ten.

I actually freaking love Phantom Menace. HAHAHAHAHAHAHA
WONDERFUL SPAM, MARVELOUS SPAM.
Matt: It was scarily similar to how the TB got started. Because Kath did a sonic rainboom to introduce me to you and everyone. We've
already established that Kath is Rainbow Dash.

I keep losing count of the deleted threads. >.>

I just gotta say, damn bots are fast. I check 'Who's Online' and see nothing. Get up, grab something, sit back down and click 'Today's Posts.'
BAM, 3 threads have already been made in those few seconds. Sheesh! XD

Is there a way to just... like ban the member? Cause it looks like they just created the account then started spamming with it.

That won't stop more of them from registering. We get bots every day, someone would have to sit and constantly ban every bot that joins. It would be
easier to keep them from joining at all, but I don't think we can yet. All we could do is prevent them from actually posting.

Is there any way we could input a captcha system or something like that? Or a security question or something?
Actually, thinking out loud (or in type) as I often do, that could take care of two problems. If we make a security question a mandatory part of the
registration process, we'll both be knocking back the spammers and providing a safety net for people that forget their passwords.
But I have no idea how you'd code something like that. I only just now found out what code is, and I don't trust it.

I had a security question in the registration on my old ShinRa forum... I know Derek still has the code for it, but I can not remember if I was using
the same version of XMB as the TB or not. I also can't remember how easy it was to install it.

Shinra v1: 1.9.1 Nexus
TB: 1.9.11
More than likely not too different a base code to work off of. In theory, it wouldn't be too hard to implement a question, just have another field in
the registration template ask for like... "Who is the S.Admin of Turkboard"
And just add in a new SQL check in the actual page that registers new accounts to see if there is a Super Admin with the same name as the input name,
and to boot them out if they get it wrong.

I am going to be looking at alternative forum softwares that have better spam detection measures.
Visio 2010 download provides a new tool for modeling, verification and reuse of complex flow chart, you can use to check a chart in the
Processes tab in the edit flow chart.Advanced drawing tools in Visio 2010 can help you to simplify your chart using the new method of dynamic visual data-driven charts and online share.
